Item is my reason for not using images on a smart phone website since they are one of the main causes of failure to download a web page efficiently on mobile phone networks with limited bandwidth and data limits. Choosing the best image based on the device's resolution Optimizing the image file size appropriately for each device and internet connection type. There are basically three factors involved… Srcset is way more complicated than this as it tries to overcome the problems associated with deciding what size of image with which pixel density should be downloaded for a particular device and connection type. I would be more inclined to go for srcset since this has now been implemented in most browsers and is more universally acceptable than Apple's - or certainly will be in the future. If you want to insert them using an tag so that they will be "seen" by the search engines you need to either use retina.js or srcset. You do need to upload 4 versions of the image if you are creating two versions of your website - one for computers and tablets and another for smart phones. I certainly do not want to upload 4 versions NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb! Any opinions expressed in this forum are my own. Srcset is the future now that most browsers can handle it it but how many "webmasters" want to load up to 4 versions of on image? I think that about 95% of users should forget about retina images. In reality, they mostly give them a quick glance and move on - especially if they are in one of those ego trip style slideshows that has more than half a dozen images. Why would you want to force a higher than necessary quality image to be downloaded on a wireless network? Is this image a work of art where the visitor is going to gasp in amazement at the fine detail? Most people who create websites are under the illusion that people actually look at all there images. You need to ask yourself if you really need this kind of quality. If the page downloads in under 3 seconds then I guess it's OK to use the higher resolution image. If you upload just an image, the browser will down sample it for non retina devices.
